House Keeping Phobia--Cockroaches

Those Disgusting Things

This hub is a continuation of why I have such a housekeeping phobia.

When I was first married my mother-in-law had a cockroach problem at her house. Well, not being a very tactful person at the time, I had to ask her how in the world she tolerated such disgusting things, especially in her kitchen?

She was a very Gracious Lady

She was that day and to the day she died, one very gracious lady. I think back on that rude question, not that I still don’t think cockroaches are disgusting, but I would have been so embarrassed if someone pointed something like that out to me.

My gracious mother-in-law began to tell me the tale of how she had become roach infested, instead of being embarrassed or reproachful.

The Whole Ground Was Moving

“We had only lived here a few weeks,” mom starts her story, “I happened to look out the kitchen window and noticed the ground between our house and the neighbor’s house was moving. I could not believe all the bugs that were moving toward my house. I didn’t know what to do about them though, I waited for dad to come home and by then it was too late they had already invaded us.”

She had to pay for a pest control to come out and exterminate the house. It slowed the little critters down but didn’t totally get rid of them. I tried to envision this mass of roaches crossing the driveway from the neighbors house, but really thought it was an exaggeration. Instead I was reminded the time my family moved to a house when I was about ten.

Memories of My Mom

My mother was cleaning and wiping the cupboards and drawers down in the kitchen before moving the kitchen paraphernalia in.

“Oh, NO!” I heard her exclaim. In a state of agitation she turned to my dad who had just walked in with a box of dishes, “there is not enough room in this house for me and one of them cockroaches!” My dad looked into the drawer that had my mom so upset and then began to smirk.

“Sweetheart, that bug is dead,” reported my dad.

“I don’t care how dead that bug is,” my mom retorted, “where there is a dead one, I’m sure there are live ones around somewhere.”

My mom was having fits over one dead cockroach and my mother-in-law was having to live with live ones. She would put out baking soda, borax and anything else someone would tell her would get rid of the nasty things. She was never able to get rid of them.

Laundry After Visit to Kansas

My husband and I moved to Wyoming with our two oldest children after we had been married about four years. We would go to Kansas and visit but upon returning home we would leave the clothes and blanket we had taken with us to visit his mom and dad in the car. Everything had to be shaken out before we would bring it in the house and then it immediately went into the washer. Each load of laundry would be examined before we put it away to make sure we didn’t unknowingly have extra baggage we couldn’t tolerate.

Preserving the Carpet

This worked out pretty well until we had new neighbors from Texas move in next door. I was pretty impressed with these new neighbors to begin with. We were invited over for coffee. After entering the front door and sitting down, the lady of the house, brought out her broom and proceeded to sweep the carpet free of our footprints. I have to say that was a new one on me, but still pretty impressive. I even tried that particular cleaning effort out for about one day. By this time we had our oldest child in kindergarten, a three year old running around and a one year old learning to walk. Trying to keep up with three children wearing out the carpet was one thing. Trying to preserve the carpet by sweeping the nap back into place was another thing. This feat still wears me out thinking about it.

Storage Facility Installed

The neighbors proceeded to build a greenhouse affair onto the back side of their house. I was really lost on this one since the backside of their house didn’t get much sun, but I thought maybe they would install grow lights or something. Nope this became a storage facility.

One day after they had returned from Texas, bringing more belongings to Wyoming and putting those belongings in the storage facility, (which I could now identify it as such), I looked out the dining room window and my mother-in-law’s story became reality.

Not an Exaggeration

That was one of those moments when the words went through my mind and out my mouth, “Oh, Lord please forgive me my unbelief!” Of course I had no idea I had spoken until my husband came up behind me and asked, “What in the world are you talking about.”

Now my husband had grown up with cockroaches and even he could not believe what he was seeing, nor did he want to have to deal with what he was seeing.

“Oh, dear, you better do something and do it quick!” I exclaimed, “there is not enough room for me and one of those critters in this house!” He had a little different comeback than my dad. This was en-mass and moving…Not dead.

“I grew up with them things, there is no way I’m going to live with them now!” Yep, you got it, the hunt was on! It wasn’t long before I looked out the window and discovered Big Nam in confrontation mode visiting the neighbor. I never did find out what Big Nam had to say to the neighbor. Darkness had set in by this time and I just cringed at the thought of them roaches getting into our house.

They're Everywhere

The next morning as I was teaching my daughter Gabby, how to use the toaster, sure enough, as the toaster began heating up, little critters began running out from under it.

“Oh, no momma, our house is going to be just like grandma’s!” Gabby exclaimed, dropping the knife she was holding to butter the toast.

House Cleaning Begins

The house cleaning spree began. You would have thought we were moving the way everything from the house went out into the front yard. Big Nam hired an exterminator to come forty miles to get rid of those critters. He had to go to work that evening and the kids and I went to stay with some friends. Luckily the weather was decent so we didn’t have to worry about what we had left outside.

Cockroach Trauma

At the time that one year old had turned three, we made another visit to Big Nam’s folks. His mom had the basement finished so the kids would have a place to play when the siblings and families came home. As Beaner began going downstairs, she happened to look up and a cockroach landed on her forehead. I don’t know how she kept from falling down the stairs but the scream we heard was not to be ignored.

“Momma! A bug just hit me in the head!” she cried as I picked her up. Now this time my mother-in-law was embarrassed and angry. Once again they had the pest control come and exterminate their house before doing the remodeling. Here she was with a houseful of company and so proud of the downstairs being able to be used for her grandchildren to have a place to play and still she was fighting cockroach infestation. To this day Beaner can’t stand cockroaches and if she sees one you will hear the words, “there is not enough room….”

"Clean" humor, eh? I'm trying not to shudder right now at the mental image of an oncoming roach plague. My wife and I are excited at the prospect of finally getting our own house this year, but now I'm feeling uncertain. Quite a story.

Another great story . See you got this knack , for keeping them interesting , I would easily have been the first to comment but I was doing something and I know if I had ever stopped , that thing would be in trouble.

I remember the Boric powder that my mom would put all over the drawers and in the corners , we were warned with no-fooling around with it.

It's simply reading you stories , so keep them coming.

Bless.

I wanted to thank you sincerely for your wise words today, but I didn't not want you to stick around , I know those kinds of people , it's the way they feel interested . It was not random it was carefully orchestrated, with only selfish reasons.

Once someone don't believe in the Most High God, there is nothing I would want from them , cause I have seen some things, see those beautiful stories of your family , as it constantly gets handed down , that's beauty .

I really don't have to listen to any thing that I feel ins nonsense. That why I told you don't stay there .

People who have kids and cannot wrap themselves in the love of their family , the can't speak that way who cares which truth the message comes in , we will make the effort decipher it as long as it is good.

When your kids comes from school you want to hear they did well, because If they say they were bullied , there you go , but look at what you are practicing .

Thanks for sharing your beautiful stories and blessings.

Eric thank you for stopping by and reading my story. I love sharing some of the experiences that have come my way. Good luck with buying your new home. I know you will enjoy it.

Thanks Sky for your wonderful visit. I knew what you were up to at the beginning. One would hope some people would get it. I lift them up in prayer and know He knows how to deal with them and bring them to truth.

Thank you for commenting on my story SKMeyer. I like to have a little humour in my stories. Sometimes I even get a life lesson in for free.

I remember this well. It took a long time for me to use a toaster. I was always afraid it was full of bugs...LOL! Great hub! I think I would rather have mice than roaches.

tlp I hate mice or roaches and I don't like them in my house.

Cardisa it is always a pleasure when you visit. I agree they are smelly and nasty. Critters like that just don't belong in a house or anywhere near humans.

Many years ago we were moving into a new home, and a neighbor had bought the place we were moving out of. I didn't know she had roaches, and inadvertantly, some of our things got mixed in together and low and behold a few weeks later I began to see the critters. I couldn't understand where they were coming from as our house was new. I mentioned to my neighbor and she told me she had a problem and that I had probably inherited them from her. I contacted a pest control company and signed a years contract. I don't like mice, but had rather have them than roaches. To me, roaches are the bane of our existence. I hate them!!! I continue paying for pest control and that was 16 years ago, due to my adversion to pests. LOL. Good hub! Well written!!!

I was a kid probably 7 or 8 at that time when I saw an English movie on national TV with subtitles didn't remember much of it except a beautiful young girl eating roaches, YUK. I feel horrible whenever I am reminded of that and your Hub did just that.

I hate them because they just keep coming back not even a nuclear bomb could take them away, anyhow good Hub and Beaner said that right "there is not enough room", Go away Hush Hush.

Good to see you Zainnisar. Sorry to remind you of a yuck movie. You are right about the nuclear bomb. I think they would find a little hidey hole to hang out in until the smoke blew over.HaHa

I had those things when I lived in South Carolina and all we could do was keep them under control (monthly spray that smelled horrible). I never ate in my house when I could keep from it. I was sick to my stomach almost always. They really are disgusting and they do travel from house to house is why they can never be killed out. I heard boric acid kills them but it is poisonous to kids and pets too.

mljdgulley354 profile image

mljdgulley354 Hub Author 3 months ago

e-penzday They are the most disgusting things I think I have ever encountered.

Jackie monthly spray is what my mother-in-law would use and usually they left for the weekend but the house still smelled bad when they came home. But she would get a little relief for a while.

Well I thank God that was the only time in my life but I imagine they must be a problem for millions of people living in certain areas and apartments, etc. One would even turn up dead in my fridge now and then. It is a good way to lose weight though! lol

I agree with aslaught, I would prefer mice.

Good story mom, I do have to say I am amazed I don't have roaches. I live in the area grandma did and I think the biggest reason grams couldn't get rid of the bugs was because she was a collector and it was a pain to dust her house. I would get fascinated at the things she kept in her hutch, but would always have to wash the dust off my hands afterwards. People say "it's not the house your comming to visit, but the person", and I do have to say grandmas house was always filled, not just the bugs once in a while, but most importantly with love. So in saying that, yuck, and your story made my skin crawl.

Sorry I didn't find Yogi's toy roach to take a pic of, but after reading this don't be supprised if you hear me cussing (out there) when I do find it. love ya

Jackie you are so right. I am afraid these bugs are probably a problem for a lot of people.

Pie I am glad you remember your grandmother's house being filled with people and so much love.

This sounds like my early days as a homemaker. I remember spraying because I saw a few and then they all starting coming out of the cracks - by the thousands it seemed. OH my gosh. I got the vacuum and vacuumed for hours and they still kept coming. This was an old building and no doubt there were thousands in the walls. Argh.

Oddly enough I moved from the city about 35 years ago and returned about 20 years ago. My building is old - built in 1851 - and there are no roaches. I am utterly shocked. I mean this is New York City which I always thought of as the roach capital of the universe. I wonder where they are? Oops - I better not say anything.

At first, I was afraid of them. But, my mom used to tell me that when roaches come out of their hiding, a change of temperature or weather indicates that there'll be rain or even earthquake.

I'm getting used to some flying creatures at night, like those roaches.

It's better to open you light (use LED light for efficiency and current-saving factor)in the kitchen when the night comes so that cockroaches will not come out during nighttime. It helps...:D
